Early on in my life my mother instilled in me the values of hard work, sacrifice, and self determination. It was difficult for her to raise two boys, mostly on her own, but her example has been something I will always carry with me. The purpose of our government was spelled out in the Declaration of Independence when Thomas Jefferson wrote, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." It is government's purpose to secure the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, not try to provide for what government thinks every person's life, liberty and happiness should be.
