(Marietta, GA) - Republican State House candidate Jason Shepherd posted his strongest fundraising numbers yet with $ 16,753.10 raised in the period ending September 30, 2010. Among Shepherd's contributors is Atlanta philanthropist and co-founder of The Home Depot, Bernie Marcus.

"It is truly an honor to have the support of one of Atlanta's best known businessmen," said Shepherd. "Mr. Marcus has left a major impact on our community through both his business and charitable endeavors."

Shepherd has raised a total of $38,817 from almost 320 contributions since beginning his campaign.

"Our average contribution is $121.30," Shepherd said. "Many people are still hurting in this economy, but they believe we must turn our state around and are willing to invest in that kind of renewal."

Shepherd's opponent, the Democrat incumbent, has continued to raise funds mostly from special interests including, once again, organized labor.

"It has been a goal of the Democrats in Washington to end right to work laws in the states like Georgia," said Shepherd. "Considering how much organized labor has contributed to my opponent, it would seem obvious that he would fall in line with that goal."

Shepherd believes that the contrast could not be clearer in this election.

"On one hand, you have candidate that is supported by Bernie Marcus, one of our state's leading entrepreneurs, a man who has helped create thousands of jobs in our state," said Shepherd. "On the other hand, you have a candidate that's in the back pocket of big labor bosses like the AFL-CIO and the UAW. I am confident the voters will make the right decision as to which candidate can get Georgia working again."

"I've sent a message to people in politics that there is a line that you better not cross. Untruthful, personal attacks that can't be backed up there's no place for them and you can be held financially liable for it.''

- Mark Taylor, former Democratic Lt. Governor of Georgia

On Monday, September 27, 2010, the Democratic Party of Georgia and my opponent released a desperate smear attack against me digging up an arrest for simple battery that was more than a decade old. What the Democrats and my opponent fail repeatedly to mention is that the charges were dropped and the case dismissed.

I have been open and honest about the arrest that was from more than a decade ago when I was in my early 20's, even to the point of discussing it with members of the Kennesaw State College Republicans just a few weeks ago. I did in 2000 and still to this day maintain that there was no validity to the charges.

We have focused our campaign on the issues; job creation, lower taxes and common sense transportation solutions. The Democratic Party and the incumbent seem only to want to discuss rumors and innuendo and sling mud.

If that was not depraved enough, they have accused my wife as being a mail order bride on their mouthpiece, Blog for Democracy. I don't care what they say about me, but attacking my wife and making false accusations against her is even too low for politics.

It is these kinds of personal, sleazy, and baseless attacks that people are sick and tired of and takes the focus away from the real problems our state and nation is facing. With this desperate attack, the Democrat Party has shown that House District 37 is ground zero for the political fight in Georgia.

The Democratic Party of Georgia and Rep. Terry Johnson have used the serious issue of violence against women as a cheap political trick which undermines the issue for thousands of men, women and children who truly are victims of domestic violence each year. They should be ashamed of themselves.

With your support, I know this is a race we will win.

Thinking Right’s weekend free-for-all. Pick a topic:

● National Democrats, frightened by the prospect that voters will throw them out of power in Congress, launch a new strategy, according to The New York Times. It’s to scour the public records and other sources to find trash on Republican challengers. This is “an effort to plant doubts about them and avoid having races become a national referendum on the performance of President Barack Obama and his party,” the newspaper reports. Once the sleaze starts, there’s no stopping. Democrats here even targeted a smear job at Jason Shepherd, who’s running for the Georgia House against incumbent Democrat Rep. Terry Johnson of Marietta. It all centers on Shepherd’s decision to abandon his father’s surname following his parents’ divorce — but, of course, the smut-searchers found something sinister in it. For goodness sakes, trashing a 34-year-old in a race far removed from Congress and national politics. It’s why good people avoid public service.

I have no idea what Jason Shepherd did, or didn't do, years ago with his ex-fiance. I've only met Jason once, and know him only through FaceBook. I've never even met his wife Manuela. But this latest attack by a nasty blogger running a GA Democratic website is below low. Jason put himself out as a candidate and is fair game. His public record is fair game. Read the police report and comment on that. Comment on his delay of changing his name. Comment on the facts. (What a novel idea). Leave his wife out of it. I think ALL spouses of candidates should be left out of comments. From what I've read, Manuela is teacher for mentally disabled children, and should get a MEDAL not be bashed in a blog!!! And, as for being called "a mail-order bride" well, as the sister-in-law of an incredible woman from another country, I take personal offense at that Neanderthal, ignorant comment. It's jingoistic and incredibly prejudiced. Jason, you are more than welcome to re-post and share this and put it on your website. Manuela, even though I don't know you, my sincerest sympathy for this trashy mud and my sincerest thanks for what you are doing with your life's work with those dear students.

(Marietta, GA) House District 37 Republican candidate Jason Shepherd has pledged to make public his legislative expenses after shocking abuses of taxpayer funds were found in incumbent Democrat Terry Johnson's expense records.

"Democrat Terry Johnson has been spending taxpayer money like it was his own personal bank account," said Shepherd. "Over $4,000 for new office furniture; over $800 at the Apple Store and almost $6,500 to his Florida political consultant show a pattern that is clearly an unethical abuse of power."

Each member of the legislature is given an office expense account to use to pay extra staff, buy stationary, and for other expenses that are necessary to manage their legislative office. A review of Terry Johnson's expenses show that in April 2009, he was reimbursed $3,153.45 for the "leasing of equipment." Johnson also submitted a check for $3,153.45 written by his wife, Nancy Johnson, to Woodstock Furniture Outlet for, according to the memo line, "Office Furniture."

"I wish it stopped there," said Shepherd. "But if you keep looking, you find three itemized receipts for $501.67, $51.25, and $283.92 from the Apple Store; an additional $1,102.06 for a desk and lamp at Woodstock Furniture Outlet; and invoices and checks for $3,500.00 and $2,962.00 from his Florida political consultant, Mad Dog Mail, Inc."

While expenditures like this are not technically illegal, they are hard for any politician to ethically justify as legitimate "office" expenses.

"No elected official should be using taxpayer money to furnish their home or buy high end personal electronics with taxpayer money," said Shepherd. "That is why I am pledging to my district that I will publicly post all of my office expenses on my website so the people of House District 37 can judge for themselves if I am spending their tax dollars wisely, especially at a time when so many teachers are being laid off because there are not enough tax funds to pay their salaries."

All of the information about Terry Johnson's expenditures can found at http://www.TheTruthAboutTerry.com, a website maintained by Kennesaw State University College Republican President Robert Potts.

Shepherd Signs Pledge Agreeing Not to Abuse Taxpayer Funded Legislative Expense Account; Urges Johnson to Do Same

Will Propose Legislation Prohibiting Legislators from Using Taxpayer Funds to Mail Legislative "Newsletters" within 60 Days of an Election

(MARIETTA) - State House Candidate Jason Shepherd has signed a pledge to the voters of the 37th District that he will not abuse taxpayer dollars by mailing out legislative newsletters within 60 days of an election in which he has competition.

"While many members of the legislature use their taxpayer funded expense accounts to send updates to their constituents, it is an unethical abuse of taxpayer funds when a legislator sends it out in the middle of their re-election campaign, months after the legislative session has ended," said Shepherd. "That's why I have signed a pledge that as State Representative, I will not abuse taxpayer funds by mailing out these unsolicited legislative updates within 60 days of an election and will work to pass legislation making this practice illegal in the State of Georgia."

The 60 day requirement is not even as strict as the 90 day requirement currently in place for members of Congress. Federal law prohibits a member of Congress from mass mailings fewer than 90 days before any primary election or general election in which the member is a candidate for reelection.

The last day of the legislative session occurred in late April. With less than four weeks before his July 20 primary election against Mark Koch, Representative Terry Johnson's newsletters started hitting mailboxes across the district the last week of June and the first week of July. At that point, the legislative session had ended more than eight weeks before. Johnson beat Koch on July 20 with more than 70% of the Democrat vote.

"It is disingenuous for Terry Johnson to talk about voting against the budget to protect teachers while spending thousands of taxpayer dollars on a mailer timed to help him get re-elected," said Shepherd. "Yesterday, I sent Terry Johnson a copy of the pledge via email and am urging him to join me by signing it. Furthermore, I and am asking Terry Johnson to reimburse the State of Georgia out of his campaign account for this obvious campaign mailer."

A copy of the pledge can be found on his website at www.ShepforRep.com or downloaded by clicking here. A copy of Shepherd's email to Johnson can be downloaded here.

Shepherd Tops Johnson in Vote Totals

Receives over 900 more votes unopposed than Johnson does in his contested primary

(Marietta, GA) – Republican State House candidate Jason Shepherd received over 900 more votes than his opponent, incumbent Democrat Terry Johnson, in Tuesday’s primary election. Shepherd, who was unopposed on the Republican ballot, received 2,227 votes while Johnson, who was facing a primary challenge by political newcomer Mark Koch, received only 1,297 votes according to the unofficial results published by the Secretary of State’s Office.

“I am thrilled to see this level of excitement among Republican voters,” said Shepherd. “We have only just begun to get our message about job creation, education, and accountability out and it is already having an impact.”

Typically, unopposed candidates experience a significant amount of “drop-off” if they are unopposed. While voters are more likely to vote in a contested race, regardless of their knowledge of the two candidates, they tend to skip over uncontested races. That result can be found in the statewide results for Senator Johnny Isakson and Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. Both candidates were unopposed and both received over 100,000 less votes than all of the gubernatorial candidates combined. The lower down the ballot a race is, the higher the drop-off.

“We experienced about a 25% drop-off as compared to the governor’s race,” said Shepherd. “The Johnson-Koch primary only received about a 13% drop-off.”

With polls both in Georgia and nationally showing Republicans expected to turn out in high numbers this year, the primary results do not look promising for Johnson.

“Voters in Cobb have a clear choice this year between someone who brings new ideas and a fresh approach versus someone who does not have one single legislative accomplishment in the six years he has represented this district,” said Shepherd. “A choice between more accountability versus a Representative who abuses his taxpayer funded expense account to send out taxpayer reimbursed mailers during the campaign and spends over $3,150 of our tax dollars to refurnish his office during the worst recession our state has faced. I am confident the voters will make the right choice this November.”

MARIETTA - Cobb's delegation in the Georgia House of Representatives may look nearly the same as this year.

As of late Tuesday, it appeared that the anti-incumbency voices being heard throughout the nation did not reach Cobb's legislative delegation.

All but one House incumbent defeated their challengers in each of the six contested primary General Assembly races, according to unofficial election results reported by the Georgia Secretary of State office. Democratic incumbent Don Wix in southwest Cobb lost to David Wilkerson, former Cobb Democratic Party chairman.

The southwest Cobb district that includes unincorporated Mableton and the city of Powder Springs has change in demographics over the years. In 2004, the district was 61 percent white. But now, according to data from the Secretary of State's office, the district is more diverse, about 48 percent white and 45 percent black.

Nonetheless, Wilkerson said hard work on the campaign trail and listening to voters; and not race was the deciding factor in his win. Education, jobs and foreclosures are what concerned voters in the district, he said.

"We knocked on thousands of doors," Wilkerson said.

"We had a consistent message whether we were talking to white, Latino, African-American voters. All our mail pieces were the same. We sent the same exact information to everybody."

Wix did not return a call requesting comment by press time.

Republican incumbent Sharon Cooper, who defeated her challenger Calvin Rhodes, said she believed the key for incumbents winning their primaries was getting their message out to voters.

"I think that the people look at the candidates - open and honest - and they made their decision," she said. "I trust the citizens. They're a lot smarter than some people give them credit for."

Republican incumbent Judy Manning won 4,302 votes or 70.1 percent compared to Buddy Simpson's 1,832 votes or 29.9 percent, with 22 of 22 precincts reporting, according to the state Secretary of State's website.

Manning, 67, survived the primary challenge by stressing her conservative values. Simpson, 43, a landscaper, called those values into question when he criticized her "progressive" voting record in the House. Manning has represented the Marietta-north Cobb district since 1997.

She did not return a call asking for comment by press time.

Simpson said he learned a lot from his first political race. If he had to do it over, he said he would have focused more on raising money and reached out to more voters.

Manning will face Democrat Kevin Hagler of Kennesaw, a 23-year-old student, in the Nov. 2 general election.

Georgia House District 33, southwest Cobb

David Wilkerson

Democratic incumbent Don Wix

David Wilkerson received 1,588 votes, or 53 percent with 14 of 14 precincts reporting. Wix earned 1,410 votes or 47 percent

Wilkerson, 41, former chairman of the Cobb Democratic Party, jumped into the race months after his term as party leader ended in 2008. He did not hold back his disapproval of the job Wix has done at the state Capitol since he was elected in 1998. The southwest Cobb district seat was formerly held by former Gov. Roy Barnes.

However, Wix, 64, raised more money and during the last three-months of the campaign outspent Wilkerson by $2,475.

Georgia House District 37, central Cobb

Democratic incumbent Terry Johnson received 1,258 votes, or 73.4 percent with 11 of 11precincts reporting. Mark Koch received 457 or 26.6 percent.

Johnson, 60, a Gold Dome veteran, had no problem defeating his politically inexperienced challenger, Mark Koch, 53, a Cobb School District bus driver. Johnson raised considerably more campaign money than his opponent. He last reported $22,700 on hand in disclosure reports compared to Koch's $50.64.

Republican Jason Shepherd, 34, a public relations and technology consultant, intends to challenge Johnson in November.

"I can't thank the supporters enough for their encouragement and enthusiasm about the race," said Johnson.

Georgia House District 39, south Cobb

Democratic incumbent Alisha Thomas Morgan received 2,266 votes, or 73.9 percent with 13 of 13 precincts reporting. Her challenger, Betty Gray, received 800 votes or 26.1 percent.

It is Gray's second defeat to the wife-and-husband duo Alisha and David Morgan. Gray served 16 years on the Cobb Board of Education until losing re-election in 2008 to David Morgan. Alisha Morgan, Cobb's first black representative, has held the south Cobb district seat since 2003.

"I have great respect for Betty and the legacy that she leaves behind in Cobb County. I appreciate the fact that she ran a clean race and I respect her work," said Morgan, 31, who celebrated from home. "We ran a hard fought campaign and brought a lot of new people into the process."

Gray, 77, said she is unsure if it was her last election. But she added that she hopes Alisha Morgan will be as vocal for improving public education funding as she has been for school vouchers.

"Where ever I am, make no mistake about that it that I will be focused on education," said Gray, who viewed election results from home.

Georgia House District 41, east Cobb

Republican incumbent Sharon Cooper received 2,736 votes, or 61.7 percent with 12 of 12 precincts reporting. Calvin Rhodes received 1,701 votes or 38.3 percent.

Cooper, 67, is a nurse who has represented east Cobb since 1996. Rhodes, 46, is founder of Paladin Investments, a real estate and business consulting firm. He challenged Cooper's conservative credentials during the Republican primary, touting his endorsements from Georgia Right to Life and a tea party group.

Cooper will face Democrat Diane Lore, president of Deep South Digital, on Nov. 2.

Cooper said the voters chose her because they knew where she stood on the issues.

"They knew my record of accomplishment, that I'm very straight forward, and tell them like it is," said Cooper. "I think this victory...just reaffirms the fact that people in my district know how hard I've worked for them."

Georgia House District 44, southeast Cobb

Democratic incumbent Sheila Jones received 2,303 votes, or 82.3 percent with 17 of 17 precincts reporting. Her opponent, Steven Lee, garnered 494 votes or 17.7 percent.

Jones, 54, was challenged by Atlanta resident Steven Lee, 46, a nonprofit executive, for the third time in the past three Democratic primary elections, since she was first elected in 2004. The southeast Cobb House district straddles Cobb and Fulton counties.

She said her work in the legislature proved to be winning factor in the race.

"We got our message out to remind them of what we've done," said Jones after leaving her campaign office Tuesday night to view the returns.

(Marietta, GA) - Republican State House candidate Jason Shepherd had another successful fundraising period, despite the slow economy, raising a total of $23,264.64 since entering the race from more than 244 contributions.

"We are getting a lot of small contributions from grassroots supporters," said Shepherd. "Many are people who have been hit especially hard by this economy, but are encouraged by having someone in the State House who will work hard for them and not the special interests."

Democrat incumbent Terry Johnson also filed his disclosure with more than half of his 34 itemized contributions coming from corporations that do business with the State of Georgia, special interest political action committees, current and former Democrat elected officials and labor unions.

"Although he constantly refers to himself as a conservative," said Shepherd. "Terry Johnson's campaign disclosures tell a different story. Considering where his support is coming from, it makes one wonder who he is really representing down at the Gold Dome."

Johnson received campaign contributions from organizations like the Brotherhood of Local Engineering and Trainmen PAC, GA AFL-CIO, GA State Council of Machinists, and the UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) 1996 Active Ballot Club.

by the Marietta Daily Journal staff
June 09, 2010

Georgia Right to Life has endorsed state Sen. Judson Hill, of east Cobb, for re-election in District 32, which includes Sandy Springs. Hill, who has also been endorsed by the Cobb County Association of Educators, was stripped of his role as chairman of the Senate Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee by Senate leadership earlier this year for failing to vote in favor of a bill that imposes a fee on hospitals' net revenues. Hill has also had complaints filed against him with the State Ethics Commission regarding his campaign expenditures.

Meanwhile, Cobb Deputy Sheriff Lynda Coker, who is challenging Hill in the July 20 Republican primary, invites supporters to walk the neighborhoods with her as she campaigns. Meet every Saturday at 10 a.m. at 4560 Ponte Vedra Drive, with upcoming dates of June 12, June 19, June 26 and July 10. Coker also invites supporters to walk with her Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. beginning tonight, and on June 23, June 30 and July 14.

wilkerson scoffs at rumor: Austell CPA David Wilkerson, who is challenging Don Wix in the July Democratic primary, would like to put to rest the rumor that he was placed in the race by state Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell) and her husband, Cobb school board member David Morgan.

"They're trying to say there's some plot by the Morgans to increase their influence, I guess," Wilkerson said of his opponent.

Although he's friendly with the Morgans, they did not put him in the race, said Wilkerson, who chaired the Cobb Democratic Party from 2006 to 2008.

"I've been involved in the Democratic Party for over 15 years since I moved to the area," Wilkerson said.

senator of year: Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) has been named Senator of the Year for 2010 by the Georgia Retail Association. This is the fourth time Rogers has won the award. The Georgia Retail Association has represented the interests of state retailers for more than 40 years. Democrat Patrick Thompson has qualified to challenge Rogers on Nov. 2.

shepherd draws support: Republican Jason Shepherd, a public relations consultant vying for state House in District 37, south Cobb, has several politicos supporting his effort to unseat incumbent Democrat Terry Johnson of Marietta in November. Among the Republicans supporting Shepherd are [Senators] Rogers, Hill, Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine, Secretary of State Brian Kemp, State Rep. Earl Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs), State Rep. Don Parsons (R-east Cobb), state Rep. Ed Setzler (R-Acworth), Cobb County Solicitor General Barry E. Morgan, Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren and former county chairmen Sam Olens and Bill Byrne.
