MDJ: AROUND TOWN: SPLOST campaign in gear; Cobb GOP election today

COBB GOP ELECTION: Cobb Republicans meet this morning to decide whether to give Cobb GOP Chair Rose Wing another term or replace her with challenger Jason Shepherd.

Shepherd, a Marietta attorney, is running on a “Make Cobb Red Again” campaign in the wake of Hillary Clinton winning Cobb County in the presidential election. He threw a get-out-the-vote party at the Strand Theatre Thursday evening where he played an endorsement video from Daniel Hannan, a member of the British Conservative Party and one of the leaders behind the efforts to pull the United Kingdom out of the European Union. Shepherd said he came to know Hannan through his work with the Young Republicans National Federation.

Shepherd warned today’s attendees to watch out for several things he believes Wing and her lieutenants may try to do at the meeting, among them eliminating the secret ballot.

Shepherd warned today’s attendees to watch out for several things he believes Wing and her lieutenants may try to do at the meeting, among them eliminating the secret ballot.

“They may try to keep it from being a secret ballot, which it normally is. I can’t remember a time when we’ve had a challenge and it wasn’t a secret ballot,” he said.

Another thing he’s on the lookout for is Team Wing appointing delegates who haven’t been elected.

“The problem with Rose this time, as opposed to two years ago, is she’s already been warned,” Shepherd said. “She got the slap on the wrist by the 11th District. If she does it again she jeopardizes Cobb being able to attend district and state conventions. It could become a very serious matter.”

When Shepherd first ran against Wing two years ago, Joe Dendy, who is now awaiting trial on charges of child molestation, was chairman and Wing was first vice chair. Shepherd said at the time the 11th Congressional District Republican Committee found Team Dendy had packed the convention with unqualified voters.

Yet Wing, who could not be reached by press time, has previously said she is proud of her record and deserving of re-election. She said Cobb brought in more votes than any other county in Georgia for Trump. And she has denied accusations of packing past conventions.

A third thing Shepherd said he expects today is delay tactics where attendees end up getting tired of waiting and leave before it’s over. So bring a book and a snack, he suggested.

“Doors close at 10 a.m. and that’s when the fireworks start,” he said.

The Cobb GOP County Convention will be held at Roswell Street Baptist Church in the gymnasium, Building G
